  2. Welcome to The Best of the PC Magazine Utilities.
  3.  
  4. There are 3 directories on this disk, and each contains the
  5. best utilities in these categories that we've published
  6. over the last five years: there are separate directories
  7. for DOS, Video and Printing utilities.
  8.  
  9. You can run the utilities simply by typing
  10. "DOS", "Video" or "Printing" from the command line.
  11. That will start a shell program that lets you see the
  12. documentation on the right side of the screen and lets
  13. you run the utility by selecting it with the enter key.
  14.  
  15. Each of the group's shell program is in that directory;
  16. for DOS, it's called PCMAGDOS; for video, it's called
  17. PCMAGVID; and for printing, it's called PCMAGPRN.
  18.  
  19. To use one of these utilities on another disk, simply copy the
  20. individual program file from its directory.
  21.  
  22. For example, to copy ALIAS.COM to your hard disk, enter
  23.  
  24. COPY A:\DOS\ALIAS.COM C:
  25.  
  26. If you want to copy all of the programs in a category to
  27. a hard disk, copy the entire directory; you can then run
  28. the utilities from their shell program by entering "PCMAGVID",
  29. "PCMAGDOS" or "PCMAGPRN" from the command line for the
  30. video, DOS and printing directories, respectively. Make
  31. sure you include the PCMAG program and overlay files
  32. when you copy the directory.

  34. The full documentation for all of the utilities is on
  35. the second disk you received. You'll find DOS.TXT, VIDEO.TXT
  36. and PRINT.TXT, with text on each of the programs. You can
  37. copy any of these files to your printer, or merge them
  38. into a word processing document if you want to do some
  39. editing, first.

  41. Many of the utilities are TSRs (terminate-and-stay-resident)
  42. programs that may conflict with other programs you're running.
  43. Instructions for altering the hot-key combiantions of the utilites
  44. are contained in a text file on the disk called HOTKEY.MOD.

  46. To get more information about the programs, you may want to
  47. read the article that accompanied the program when it was
  48. originally presented in PC MAGAZINE. Each program's publication
  49. date is listed with the documentation on this disk. The easiest
  50. way to get hold of an old article is to call up PC MAGAZINE's
  51. on-line service, PC MagNet. Directions for signing up are available
  52. by pressing F2 when running the shell program that brings
  53. up the utilities in each category.

  55. And, to get the newest utilities as they're published
  56. subscribe to PC MagNet and download them as soon as their
  57. available.
